Discover & Investigate

April 2-6, 2018: Registration is now open!

Lost River Cave’s Spring Break Nature Discovery Camp is designed for children ages 6-12 who will meet every morning for five days to learn more about nature, enjoy the outdoors and make nature-inspired crafts. The camp begins Monday, April 2, 2018. Each session will last from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will include a nutritious, mid-morning snack. Children will learn about intricate ecosystems and crawling through cave passages to explore Kentucky’s unique Karst environment. The Nature Center programs at Lost River Cave are constructed to give children the best possible hands-on experience in the outdoors.

2018 Spring Break Nature Discovery Camp Schedule

April 2, 2018: Environmental Indicators

8:00am-12 noon

Open up and say “ahhh!” Learn how to tell if the environment is healthy and happy! Plants, amphibians, insects and water can help you determine if the world around you is safe for the wildlife-and people-living nearby.

April 3, 2018: Invasives!

8:00am-12 noon

Don’t let them take over! Invasives are plant and animal species that sneak into an area and grow uncontrollably taking over the habitat of the native species. Learn about some invasives, how they got there and why they are bad. Help the park remove some invasive plants to make room for new wildflowers.

April 4, 2018: Wildlife & Human Communities

8:00am-12 noon

Do animals have trash pick-up, highways, or housing complexes? Comparing our communities and services with those happening with wildlife is a great way to relate to nature and understand more about what’s going on there.

April 5, 2018: Cause & Effect

8:00am-12 noon

To dam or not to dam? Learn about human interactions and the effects to the environment.

April 6, 2018: Habitat Remediation

8:00am-12 noon

Now what? Sometimes adverse things happen to the environment; remediation techniques can help replace and revitalize an ecosystem. Participants will learn ways that can help the earth recover.
