Nature Experiences for Girls


Designed for girls ages 8-13

The Girls in Nature Series is designed to inspire girls’ interest in nature and develop their outdoor skills in a fun, engaging environment. The GINS program focuses on cooperation, self-confidence, and leadership skills.  Each class is a journey for the girls to challenge themselves with wayfinding, stamina, and environmental and personal responsibility.  Sign-up for the whole series or for individual programs.

November 16 2019: To Build A Fire

10:00am-12 noon

Nothing will fuel her confidence like hearing the crackle and pop of a fire she has created herself. In this program, your girl will learn one of humankind’s oldest survival skills.  Register them today so they can continue a tradition as old as human history!

During this class the girls will:

  • Collect the components of a fire and build one
  • Learn fire safety and proper extinguishing techniques
  • Enjoy the fire with marshmallows and Stories

March 21 2020: An Ounce of Prevention…Leave No Trace and Trail First Aid

10:00am-12 noon

Instill future stewardship for the natural world in your young lady as she learns principles of outdoor ethics!  She’ll also gain essential basic outdoor first aid skills for moments when blisters, bumps, and bruises blemish the adventure.

September 12, 2020: (Don’t) Get Lost in the Woods

10:00am-12 noon

They’ve spent years looking for Carmen San Diego. Now it’s time for your daughters to start looking for themselves. During this excursion girls will use different mapping techniques to hide and find hidden treasure, plan a mountain climbing trip, and determine elevations. Sign them up today to help them gain the confidence to go anywhere and know their place in the outdoors!

During this class the girls will:

  • Make their own treasure maps – then switch with another team to find each other’s prize!
  • Learn to read topographic maps and then use their new skills to plan an adventure!
  • Learn to use surveying equipment to compare elevations along a tricky slope!

December 12 2020: Let’s Go Caving

10:00am-12 noon

See a deeper and muddier side of nature while you follow in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers and crawl down into Kentucky’s karst environment. Learn safe caving practices and explore the upper passageways of Lost River Cave.
